At the ceremony awarding the Gold Medal of the Architects’ Association of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro to Javier Díaz-Llanos and Vicente Saavedra, Juan Antonio González, the author of the book Díaz-Llanos / Saavedra, the third in a series of monographs on major figures of 20th-century Canary Island architecture, gave a presentation on the life and works of these Tenerife architects. The event was held at the headquarters of the Architects’ Association in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a building designed by Díaz-Llanos and Saavedra in the late 1960s.
Our design won first prize in the design competition organised by the Fuerteventura Island Council for the Headquarters of the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve. The design reinterprets the elements of the island’s traditional water engineering techniques, such as collection points, irrigation ditches and cisterns, to produce an artificial topography that conceals the building’s main functional areas underground, all topped by a lightweight, funnel-shaped canopy that provides climate control and acts as a landmark for the area.

In explaining its decision to award the prize to the Faculty of Fine Arts, the jury highlighted the building’s “economy of material and formal resources in a hostile environment located just off a motorway and in an unused corner of the university campus” and its “ability to stand out on many different scales with a calligraphy that creates its own environment, while constituting an innovative design for university buildings”.
