Book presentation: “Turismo. Paisaje. Futuro. Hacia una transición turística en Canarias” (Tourism. Landscape. Future. Spain-Korea Best Architecture 25+25 2022
GPY Arquitectos takes part in the Spain-Korea Best Architecture Exhibition, organised by the Architecture Design Institute of Korea (ADIK), the Architects’ Association of Madrid (COAM), under the auspices of the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Embassy of Spain in Korea, the Embassy of Korea in Spain and the Instituto Cervantes in Seoul. The exhibition, which features outstanding works of 25 Korean and 25 Spanish Architecture studios will be on show at the Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture until 14 July 2022.

The International Architecture Awards are the world’s oldest and most prestigious global architecture awards for the best new buildings and urban planning projects from over 35 nations.
The award winning entries will be featured in an exhibition in Athens, Greece. Opening: 10 September 2021.

The MIAC Castillo de San José has received an IAA International Architecture Award 2020 by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, a “distinguished building awards program that honours new and cutting-edge design worldwide. This annual program also promotes international architecture and design to our public audience globally” (text by the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies). The project will be on show at the awards exhibition “The City and the World” at The Contemporary Space, Athens, until 25th October 2020 and will be published in the awards’ catalogue ‘New International Architecture 2020 | Global Design + Urbanism XX’.

GPY Arquitectos was awarded the S.ARCH Conceptual Design Award 2019 for its proposed extension to the International Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo, MIAC), which forms part of the island of Lanzarote’s network of Art, Culture and Tourism Centres. The award was granted in recognition of a design that intensifies the relationship between architecture, heritage and landscape in the island context of Lanzarote. GPY Arquitectos’s proposal for the new Headquarters of the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve was also selected as a finalist in the same category of ‘Conceptual Design’.

At the ceremony awarding the Gold Medal of the Architects’ Association of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro to Javier Díaz-Llanos and Vicente Saavedra, Juan Antonio González, the author of the book Díaz-Llanos / Saavedra, the third in a series of monographs on major figures of 20th-century Canary Island architecture, gave a presentation on the life and works of these Tenerife architects. The event was held at the headquarters of the Architects’ Association in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a building designed by Díaz-Llanos and Saavedra in the late 1960s.

Our design won first prize in the design competition organised by the Fuerteventura Island Council for the Headquarters of the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve. The design reinterprets the elements of the island’s traditional water engineering techniques, such as collection points, irrigation ditches and cisterns, to produce an artificial topography that conceals the building’s main functional areas underground, all topped by a lightweight, funnel-shaped canopy that provides climate control and acts as a landmark for the area.

The Vecindario Security Centre in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, was awarded the first annual Architecture Award Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre MMFT 2018.
This award, sponsored by the Gran Canaria Architects’ Association, was granted in recognition of GPY Arquitectos’ creative design. In its assessment of the Security Centre, the jury highlighted the building’s “integration into its surroundings, its ability to revitalise and strengthen the urban space and immediate environment, and its contemporary feel and expressive character.”

The Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna was awarded the 2018 Manuel de Oráa Award by the Architects’ Association of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, in the category of New projects: other uses, an award it shared with the TEA - Tenerife Espacio de las Artes by Herzog & de Meuron and Virgilio Gutierrez. In explaining its decision to award the prize to the Faculty of Fine Arts, the jury highlighted the building’s “economy of material and formal resources in a hostile environment located just off a motorway and in an unused corner of the university campus” and its “ability to stand out on many different scales with a calligraphy that creates its own environment, while constituting an innovative design for university buildings”.
In the same competition, the Factoría de Innovación Turística FIT in Adeje received an Honourable Mention in the category of Interior design.

The short film Escenas Urbanas by Constanze Sixt, produced with Andrzej Gwizdala and Yeru García with the assistance of the students of architecture of the Universidad Europea de Canarias, was awarded first prize in the Entreplanos 2 audiovisual competition. This competition, organised by the Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea with the support of the Department of Culture of the Cordoba Provincial Council, aims to “foster reflection and debate on urban realities while encouraging citizens to participate in artistic creation and incorporate new technologies into their everyday lives as tools for creating, exploring and disseminating contemporary ideas”.

Juan Antonio González Pérez and Constanze Sixt were invited by the Madeira Architects’ Association (OASRS Ordem dos Arquitectos, Secção Regional Sul, Delegação da Madeira) to speak at the International Conference of Architecture for Education (Arquitectura para o Ensino). The event, which is intended to contribute to the current debate on the quality of educational architecture in Portugal, was held on 21 October in the Teatro Baltazar Dias, Funchal. Guests included renowned experts in educational architecture, such as Gonçalo Canto Moniz, a university professor and researcher at the University of Coimbra, the architects José Neves and Pedro Machado Costa from Lisbon, and the Dutch architect Robert Alewijnse, co-director of the architecture firm DP6 in Delft.
